Camino de Flores Pilgrimage Pilot Begins in Indonesia

Camino de Flores Pilgrimage Pilot Begins in Indonesia

Indonesia’s Camino de Flores pilgrimage initiative is entering its first pilot phase on October 23, 2026, with a walking programme designed to connect prayer, cultural heritage and encounters with local communities on the island of Flores.

Five days on foot

According to Vatican News, the pilot is scheduled for October 23–27 and covers approximately 70 kilometres from Bajawa through Boawae to Ende. Around 70 participants from charitable communities are expected to join the journey, combining spiritual reflection, local history and meetings with residents.

The route takes inspiration from Spain’s Camino de Santiago while drawing on the distinct traditions and religious heritage of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara.

Pilgrimage with community benefits

Tourism authorities hope the project will help spread the benefits of visiting Flores beyond its best-known gateway, Labuan Bajo. Church representatives have welcomed the idea while urging organizers to respect local rituals, protect the environment and make sure residents share in the economic and social benefits.

Proposed future sections would connect Labuan Bajo and Ruteng in the west and Maumere and Larantuka in the east. These proposed extensions should not be confused with the confirmed October pilot.

What prospective pilgrims should know

The announced dates and route concern an initial pilot involving invited charitable communities, not confirmation of general public registration. Travellers interested in future editions should follow announcements from the organizers and local authorities before arranging travel.

For youth communities, the project is an example of how a pilgrimage can integrate contemplation, solidarity and care for creation.
