Deaf Catholics from across Asia are gathering in Seoul for the fourth Asian Deaf Catholic Conference, held October 15–21, 2026. The event brings together approximately 250 people from 22 countries to share experiences of faith and promote better access to worship and the sacraments.
Faith expressed across language barriers
Organized by the Archdiocese of Seoul and its Catholic Deaf Mission, the gathering includes liturgical celebrations, discussions and opportunities for cultural exchange. An opening Mass was scheduled for October 16 at Myeongdong Cathedral, presided over by Archbishop Peter Chung Soon-taick.
As national sign languages differ, the conference makes use of International Sign and interpreters. Yonhap reported that additional volunteers are assisting communication between participants.
A call for a more accessible Church
Father Park Min-seo, recognized as Asia’s first Deaf Catholic priest, has been instrumental in developing the gathering. The first edition took place in Bangkok in 2015, followed by Manila in 2018 and Jakarta in 2023. Discussions in Seoul focus on the participation of Deaf Catholics in church life and on removing obstacles to communication, liturgy and community.
Independent reporting by Yonhap and Newsis and Catholic coverage by AsiaNews confirm the event and its central pastoral aims. While this is not an official World Youth Day programme, it takes place in the city preparing to host WYD 2027 and offers a timely example of how international Catholic gatherings can address accessibility and welcome.
