Amazonian Catholic Youth Prepare New Mission Gatherings in Brazil

Catholic youth communities across Brazil’s Amazon region are preparing local gatherings, pilgrimages and opportunities for missionary service under the 2026 National Youth Day theme, “Go, young person, and rebuild my Church.” An October 20 report from Vatican News describes how dioceses are adapting the annual initiative to the distances and diverse needs of Amazonian communities.

Manaus plans an October 31 pilgrimage

In the Archdiocese of Manaus, the youth celebration is scheduled for October 31. Participants are to gather at the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida at 3 p.m., then walk in pilgrimage to the Shrine of St Joseph. Mass is planned for 6 p.m., followed by a concert featuring local bands.

Organizers have also made available a three-session resource combining prayer, reflection and action in response to the realities faced by young people in the region.

Different communities, different schedules

The national celebration was moved to October 11 this year, while dioceses retained flexibility over their local calendars. In Santarém, the celebration is scheduled for November 22. In Macapá, youth pilgrimages and pastoral work have already helped young Catholics deepen their participation in parish life.

Vatican News reported that one local youth coordinator attributed growth in participation, from about 900 to approximately 1,600 young people, to sustained work in 118 parish communities.

Young people as leaders

Bishops and youth organizers emphasize that participation should mean more than attendance. They want young people to help shape their communities through evangelization, social responsibility and leadership, especially where geography and vulnerability can make engagement difficult.
