New St Peter Documentary Featuring Pope Leo XIV Premieres at Rome Film Festival

A New Film Explores the Origins of St Peter’s Basilica

A documentary exploring the burial place of St Peter and the origins of the Vatican Basilica was presented at the Rome Film Festival on October 16, 2026.

Entitled Pétros ení: Discovering the Origins, the production brings together archaeology, Christian history and spiritual reflection.

American actor Chris Pratt narrates the documentary, which also features a special appearance by Pope Leo XIV.

A Journey Beneath the Vatican

Directed by Spanish filmmaker Paula Ortiz and written by Andrea Tornielli, the documentary was produced by AF Films in collaboration with Vatican Media and the Fabric of St Peter.

The film takes viewers beneath the Basilica into the Vatican Necropolis, exploring the archaeological investigations that contributed to identifying the Apostle’s burial place.

Historical documents, archival footage and expert contributions help explain the significance of this site for Christianity.

The approximately 60-minute production also examines the human character of Peter, presenting the Apostle not simply as a historical figure but as a person whose faith developed amid weakness and uncertainty.

Pope Leo XIV Reflects on Peter’s Legacy

In the film’s concluding sequences, Pope Leo XIV discusses the spiritual importance of the Apostle and the meaning of his tomb beneath the Basilica.

The documentary was presented ahead of the 400th anniversary of the consecration of the current St Peter’s Basilica, which took place on November 18, 1626.

Its premiere offers a new opportunity to explore the relationship between artistic storytelling, historical research and Christian faith.

For younger audiences, the production may also provide an accessible introduction to the history of Rome’s most important pilgrimage church.
