Toledo Cathedral Opens First Jubilee Year in 800-Year History

Toledo Cathedral in Spain inaugurated its first Jubilee Year on Sunday, 25 October 2026, opening a Holy Door as part of the cathedral’s 800th-anniversary celebrations. The Archdiocese of Toledo reported the ceremony the following day, marking a milestone in the religious and cultural history of the Gothic landmark.

A new chapter for an eight-century landmark

Archbishop Francisco Cerro Chaves, Archbishop of Toledo and Primate of Spain, presided over the opening rites and Mass at the cathedral’s main altar. The jubilee commemorates the laying of the Gothic cathedral’s foundation stone on 14 August 1226. Pope Leo XIV approved the celebration following a request from the archbishop.

Faith, architecture and memory

The Holy Door ceremony draws attention to a cathedral whose sacred art, architecture and worship have shaped Spanish Catholic heritage for generations. The archdiocese describes the jubilee as an opportunity for pilgrims to reflect on reconciliation, gratitude and participation in Church life.

For visitors and pilgrims

The observance follows the anniversary of the cathedral’s dedication and forms part of commemorations extending into 2027. Visitors should consult the Archdiocese of Toledo and cathedral organizers for up-to-date information on liturgies, access and cultural activities before planning a visit.
