European Bishops Appeal for Lasting Peace at Salzburg Assembly

European Bishops Appeal for Lasting Peace at Salzburg Assembly

European Catholic bishops have issued an appeal for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and other areas affected by war, as their plenary assembly concluded in Salzburg, Austria, on 30 October.

A call for peace in a divided Europe

The Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE) gathered from 27 to 30 October. In an appeal reported by Vatican News, the bishops stressed the human and spiritual dimensions of peace amid Europe’s ongoing conflicts.

The bishops warned that the continent is confronting its largest military conflict since the Second World War. Their appeal called for efforts toward lasting peace in Ukraine and wherever populations are suffering from violence.

Building peace from within

The message emphasised that peace requires more than negotiated agreements alone: it also demands respect for human dignity, reconciliation and a transformation of attitudes within communities.

As Catholic communities across Europe respond to war and displacement, the bishops’ appeal encourages continued prayer, solidarity and work for reconciliation.
