Rwandan Bishop Says Reconciliation Requires Daily Commitment

Reconciliation in Rwanda must be treated as an enduring responsibility rather than a one-time event, Bishop Papias Musengamana of Byumba has said. His reflections, reported by Vatican News on 25 October 2026, highlighted the Catholic Church’s work to heal relationships after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

Rebuilding communities

Speaking to Agenzia Fides on the sidelines of the International Forum of Catholic Action in Rome, held on 15–18 October, Bishop Musengamana emphasised forgiveness, restorative relationships and the need to support former prisoners returning to society. He noted that reintegration places responsibilities on individuals, families and communities.

Young people and education

Education and the formation of young people are central to this effort. The bishop described Christian values and long-term engagement as vital to creating a more peaceful society and preventing divisions from taking root again.

An ongoing process

Decades after the genocide, rebuilding trust remains complicated and demands attention to the suffering of survivors. The bishop’s message is that lasting peace depends on daily choices, dialogue and respect for human dignity.
