About 1,000 Legion of Mary members from 21 Curiae in the Diocese of Larantuka took part in a pilgrimage to Lewouran, East Flores, Indonesia, on 23 October 2026, reflecting on how devotion can lead to practical care for others. Vatican News reported on the pilgrimage on 28 October.
From Marian prayer to the church of St Peter
The pilgrims gathered at the Rosa Mistika Marian Grotto in Riangbunga, prayed and celebrated the Eucharist before proceeding to St Peter the Apostle Station Church in Lewouran. There they prayed before relics associated with St Peter and a fragment of stone from the Holy Door of St Peter’s Basilica.
Organizers described the gathering as part of an annual October pilgrimage. The local parish and Legion of Mary members worked together to welcome visitors despite the community’s limited facilities.
Faith expressed through action
Father Marco Solo Kewuta, a priest from Lewouran who serves in Rome, called on participants to carry the experience beyond the pilgrimage through compassion and service. Organizers pointed to visiting sick and elderly people, helping families in difficulty and accompanying vulnerable neighbors as ways to live out their faith.
The meeting illustrated how Catholic communities on the geographical margins of the Church remain connected to its wider life, while emphasizing that pilgrimage should deepen solidarity rather than end with an individual spiritual experience.
