Indonesia's Catholic Lay Forum Sets Five-Year Civic Mission

Indonesia’s Catholic Society Forum (FMKI) has outlined a five-year programme to bring Catholic social teaching into public life, following a national working meeting in Jakarta from 23 to 25 October 2026. The initiative places civic education, leadership formation and solidarity among its priorities.

Lay Catholics consider their public role

According to a report published by Vatican News on 26 October, around 80 Catholic lay leaders attended the gathering at the headquarters of the Indonesian Bishops’ Conference. The opening Mass was led by Bishop Yohanes Harun Yuwono, who chairs the bishops’ commission for the lay apostolate. Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, Archbishop of Jakarta, gave the keynote address during a dialogue bringing together Catholic and Muslim perspectives.

Priorities through 2031

The Forum identified organizational renewal, wider application of Catholic social teaching and preparation of ethical leaders as its three principal priorities. Planned activities include political literacy, community support, policy research, non-partisan advocacy and interfaith cooperation. The programme covers 12 fields and includes a task force focused on Papua.

Young people and the common good

FMKI aims to accompany younger generations and develop a broader culture of participation beyond party politics. Its assessment of Indonesia’s social and democratic challenges reflects the Forum’s own stated concerns rather than a formal conclusion by WYDAYS. The new agenda also highlights economic inclusion, environmental responsibility and support for vulnerable communities.
