Caritas Spain Supported 44,475 People Facing Homelessness

Caritas Spain supported 44,475 people affected by homelessness and housing insecurity in 2025, according to figures reported on October 21, 2026. The Catholic charity is now preparing a nationwide awareness campaign ahead of Homeless Persons Day on October 25.

Support rose by 3.8 percent

The number of people receiving assistance was 3.8 percent higher than in 2024. Caritas says homelessness must be understood more broadly than sleeping outdoors: it can also involve unstable accommodation, broken family ties and difficulty accessing essential services.

A campaign for dignity and belonging

Under the theme “A home, a place to belong,” people with lived experience of homelessness will participate in public activities across Spanish cities. Many events are scheduled for October 22, including the reading of a manifesto prepared with people experiencing homelessness and those who accompany them.

María Santos, responsible for Caritas Spain’s homelessness programme, warned of persistent barriers to housing, healthcare, work, social protection and participation. The campaign seeks to bring those concerns to public attention while affirming the human dignity of everyone affected.

For Catholic communities and young volunteers, the initiative offers a concrete opportunity to reflect on solidarity, housing and the importance of sustained relationships with people experiencing exclusion.
