Faith leaders, diplomats and cultural figures gathered in Abu Dhabi on October 19 to reflect on the continuing relevance of Saint Francis of Assisi, eight centuries after his death. The event brought together spirituality, literature, environmental responsibility and interreligious dialogue.
Franciscan spirituality in the Gulf
The gathering took place at the Italian Cultural Institute during the Week of the Italian Language in the World. Organized by the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia with the Italian Embassy and the Institute, it drew about 50 participants.
Bishop Paolo Martinelli, Apostolic Vicar of Southern Arabia, spoke about Saint Francis’s writings and the relationship between conversion, fraternity and peace. He recalled the saint’s encounters with people on the margins and his approach to those of different faiths.
Dialogue and care for creation
Participants explored the saint’s encounter with Sultan Malik Al Kamil, his literary contribution to the Italian language and his spiritual vision of creation. Speakers included Fr Stefano Luca, professor Roberto Catalano and Emirati artist Sheikh Ali bin Abdullah Al Mualla, whose work uses discarded materials to create art.
The discussions highlighted how Franciscan thought can speak to relationships among cultures and religious communities in the Arabian Peninsula. The meeting also showed how artistic and environmental initiatives can contribute to broader conversations on peaceful coexistence.
