A Century of Missionary Solidarity
The Catholic Church celebrates World Mission Sunday on October 18, 2026, marking 100 years since the establishment of this annual observance dedicated to prayer, solidarity and support for missionary communities around the world.
Instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1926, World Mission Sunday invites Catholics in every country to participate in the Church’s universal missionary work.
This year’s theme, One in Christ, United in Mission, was chosen by Pope Leo XIV.
Pope Leo XIV Calls for Unity in Mission
In his message for the centenary, published in January 2026, Pope Leo XIV encouraged Catholics to renew their missionary commitment through prayer, cooperation and service.
The Pope emphasized that missionary responsibility belongs to the entire Church, not only to those serving abroad.
In a video message released on October 7, he recalled how the prayers and generosity of Catholics supported his missionary work in Peru and helped shape his vocation.
What the Centenary Means for Young Catholics
The celebration offers young Catholics an opportunity to reflect on how faith translates into service.
Parishes, youth movements and Catholic communities can mark the occasion through prayer, missionary awareness and support for communities in need.
As preparations continue for World Youth Day Seoul 2027, the centenary also highlights a central dimension of the WYD experience: encouraging young people to carry their faith into everyday life.
