Pope Leo XIV Says Saints Shape History Through Faith

Pope Leo XIV told participants in a Rome conference on October 21 that the lives of the saints reveal how faith can help transform history. Speaking to members of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, he underlined the importance of reliable evidence in the Church’s examination of candidates for canonization.

Historical evidence and credible witnesses

The conference, titled “Holiness in History,” was organized by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints and held at the Pontifical Augustinianum Patristic Institute in Rome from October 19 to 21. The Pope explained that historical research in canonization causes is intended to illuminate a person’s life, spirituality and reputation for holiness, rather than simply produce an academic history.

He emphasized the need for credible, authentic testimony when the Church evaluates a proposed saint. Historical context is also essential: Christian witnesses face different challenges in different eras, even as the Church’s understanding of holiness remains rooted in the Gospel.

A message for believers today

Leo XIV described saints as models who help believers respond to the opportunities and difficulties of their own time. Their lives, he suggested, connect personal faith with responsibility toward the world around them.

For young Catholics, the address offers a reminder that sanctity is not detached from society or history. Christian witness takes shape through choices made amid the real conditions of everyday life.
